Security in the City
It is becoming increasingly important for cities to protect their citizens better against violence and crime, against harassment and threats. For the public gives highest priority to a task that is the concern of society as a whole, and which is performed in joint responsibility and distributed roles by the state, local authorities, and societal forces. And the local economy considers security and order a key locational factor. This issue of the German Journal of Urban Studies focuses on topical issues in community security policy and crime prevention. Does the installation of more and more technical surveillance systems threaten a loss of public space (Walter Siebel/Jan Wehrheim)? How is often overdramatized development of objective and subjective security to be interpreted in the light of the latest criminological findings (Dietrich Oberwittler)? What lessons can be drawn from effects research for local government action (Britta Bannenberg)? In what areas can integrated community security policy be applied, and how can it best be organised (Werner Leonhardt)? How is the development of juvenile delinquency to be assessed, and what are the consequences for effective crime prevention in youth and social policy (Silke Pies/Christian Schrapper)?
